In order to observe the Inaugural Day of the Kanyashree Project in West Bengal, a programme was organised at Gouripur Sri Sri Ramkrishna Vidyapith in the Uluberia Block-I Developement Office on 14th August, 2016. The occasion was graced by the presence of several dignitaries, including Mr. Tamojit Chakraborty, Mr. Pulak Roy, Mr. Manas Mondal, Mr. Santosh Kumar Deb and Mrs. Chakraborty. The programme was inaugurated by lighting the Holy Lamp, along with a speech from Block Development Officer Mr. Chakraborty, who spoke of the positive impact generated by the project in rural parts of West Bengal. He also mentioned that the initiative has raised the literacy rates among girls and also eliminated early marriage of females under the age of 18.

The programme witnessed participation of several girl children with disabilities from Asha Bhavan Centre for celebrating the occasion. The children staged a beautifully choreographed dance event, which was appreciated heartfeltly by both dignitaries & viewers. They had a great time taking part in the ceremony and commemorating it with their wonderful performance.

Kanyashree is a project started by Mamata Banerjee, Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, in order to enhance the well-being and present conditions of girl children, particularly those belonging to socially and economically backward families. The project aims to incentivise young girls for completing their education, prevent child marriage, provide financial support to girls by paying money directly into their bank accounts and promote psychological & social empowerment.

According to the initiative, well-educated girls would be able to utilise their knowledge and skills for becoming independent economically. And even after getting married soon as they turn 18, the literate girls will be educationally, emotionally and socially developed for leading better lives. With passage of time, whole generations of women would get married only after achieving economic independence. As such, early marriage will get eradicated entirely and pave the way for attainment of right to socio-economic equality, education and health by women.

Asha Bhavan Centre is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for the growth, development and welfare of underprivileged children from the downtrodden community. It is also an NGO for persons with disabilities that ensures and protects the rights of PWDs and CWDs. Its mission is to guarantee opportunities for economic and social development of weaker sections of the society, so that they can acquire self confidence, equity and dignity in life. Asha Bhavan Centre wishes to consolidate its support services and activities to PWDs all over India.
